Tomorrow marks one year since this post from Back then, Joe said holding $LINEA could eventually unlock rewards in other tokens - including tokens from and aligned protocols. And then came the interesting part: “MetaMask and Linea are cooking somETHing together.” A year later, we did get MetaMask Rewards. Season 1 distributed $LINEA, with rewards tied to activity across MetaMask - swaps, perps, referrals and other actions. So the rewards layer was real. But the specific mechanism Joe hinted at - holding $LINEA and potentially receiving other tokens - never publicly materialized in the form described. Maybe the reason was simply structural. At the time, MetaMask and Linea were both part of the broader Consensys structure. Now that is changing. Consensys is splitting into two independently operated companies: → MetaMask: consumer-facing finance → Consensys: protocols + institutional infrastructure, including That doesn’t mean a MetaMask token is suddenly coming tomorrow. And it doesn’t necessarily make the Linea → MASK connection stronger either. In fact, the separation could make that relationship less direct than it was a year ago. But it does create a much cleaner structure for a potential MetaMask token. Especially considering that: → Joseph Lubin said in September 2025 that “the $MASK token is coming” → officially confirmed token plans in October → MetaMask Rewards was explicitly described as having a connection to the future MetaMask token → and now MetaMask is becoming a standalone consumer-focused company. So maybe the timeline wasn’t: “No token.” Maybe it was: build the products → build the rewards layer → separate the businesses → decentralize → token. That’s obviously a theory, not a prediction.
