US semiconductor stocks have rarely been this volatile: Over the last 5 mins S&P 500 Semiconductors & Semiconductor Equipment Index has recorded 11 trading sessions in which at least 50% of its components fell -5% or more, the 4th-highest reading on record. By comparison, during the 2008 Financial Crisis, the index recorded 16 such sessions. The only other periods with more volatility were 2000 and 2002, following the Dot-Com Bubble burst. Furthermore, the S&P 500 Semiconductors & Semiconductor Equipment Index fell more than -5% on 12 trading days over the last 5 months. The index is now down -32% from its June peak, trading at its lowest level since April. Semiconductor stocks are experiencing historic volatility.

AI spending is rapidly accelerating in the US. US private fixed investment in information processing equipment and software grew at an annualized rate of +7.3% in Q3 2026, to a record $1.77 trillion. This marks the largest quarterly increase since Q4 1983. By comparison, at the height of the 2000 Dot-Com Bubble, this metric grew +6.2%. Since Q4 2022, private fixed investment in information processing equipment and software has surged +61%, or +$671 billion. As a % of GDP, this metric is up to a record 5.4%, significantly surpassing the previous high of 4.5% recorded in Q4 2000. The scale of US AI investment is unlike anything seen before.

The disconnect between oil stocks and the broader market has rarely been wider: The 6-month correlation between the S&P 500 Energy Sector and the S&P 500 is down to -0.38, near its lowest on record. This marks a sharp reversal from a positive correlation of +0.74 observed in June 2025. In the last week of September, this figure fell as low as -0.45, the lowest reading in data going back to the 1980s. The only other time since the late 1980s when the correlation between these two indices turned negative was in 2000 and 2001, during the Dot-Com Bubble burst. This all comes as the S&P 500 Energy Sector has rallied +23.1% over the last 6 months, significantly outperforming the S&P 500’s gain of +7.1%.
